Casemiro hooked at half-time as United's World Cup players face mixed fortunes
Former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro was substituted at half-time as Morocco outpressed Brazil on Saturday, while Matheus Cunha came off the bench and Noussair Mazraoui impressed at left-back for the victors.
Former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro lasted only 45 minutes as Morocco’s intensity proved too much for Brazil in their 2026 World Cup opener on Saturday, with the veteran hauled off at the break. Matheus Cunha, who was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI in favour of Brentford striker Igor Thiago, entered the fray in the 61st minute. Noussair Mazraoui was a standout performer for Morocco, making positive runs forward from left-back throughout the match.
The result is one of several early results involving United’s 12 senior players spread across the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which runs from June 11 to July 19.
Amad was also in action over the weekend, featuring for the Ivory Coast against Ecuador. Senne Lammens’ Belgium open their campaign against Egypt on Monday, though the Belgian goalkeeper is expected to be kept on the bench by experienced Real Madrid stopper Thibaut Courtois.
Manuel Ugarte, who struggled for regular game time at Old Trafford this season, is set to play a key role for Uruguay later on Monday. Despite his limited club minutes, Ugarte remains a trusted figure in the Uruguayan setup.
Later in the week, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot will lead Portugal’s challenge when they face DR Congo on Wednesday. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford are also in action that day, representing England against Croatia.
