Carrick survives United axe as INEOS doubts over replacements buy him more time
Michael Carrick has been handed a reprieve at Manchester United despite a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, with INEOS reportedly unconvinced by available replacements including Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe. He is now expected to take charge against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge after INEOS decided against pulling the trigger, with club insiders reporting that the hierarchy lacks confidence in the coaches currently available to replace him.
The reprieve follows a chastening 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday that left United in serious trouble early in the 2026/27 season. Carrick was applauded off the pitch by supporters as the final whistle sounded — a moment that club chiefs noted, given the stark contrast with the frustration directed at the players. Sources told ESPN that the fan reaction was a significant factor in the decision to give Carrick another chance.
Sources speaking to The Sun indicated that the United hierarchy is not sold on the names available, with Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe all considered but none deemed sufficiently compelling. One insider said bluntly: “The best ones won’t come.”
Carrick himself cut a subdued figure in his post-match press conference after the Bournemouth defeat, saying he would always “do what is best for this football club” regardless of the personal consequences — words that read at the time as a possible farewell.
The squad appears to have rallied around the manager. Harry Maguire was vocal in his support, saying: “We’re fully behind Michael. He came into the team last season and turned our season around and managed to finish in third position and managed to get Champions League football this season. As individuals, we’re not playing well enough. The results haven’t been good enough. Individually we’ve got to look at ourselves and find something within ourselves to bring more to the team. That’s every player.”
Not everyone appears aligned, however. Club captain Bruno Fernandes, who was left on the bench throughout the Bournemouth match despite warming up, drew attention on social media when his official account liked a video captioned: “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care.” Fernandes had reportedly been dropped after publicly criticising United’s tactical display in a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como the previous week.
Carrick now faces a defining run of fixtures, beginning with Chelsea on Saturday, as he attempts to build the form needed to silence growing doubts about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
