Lazio thrashes Sassuolo 6-2 and takes top spot, Como stages dramatic comeback to stun Torino
Lazio dominated Sassuolo 6-2 away in Serie A matchday 9, provisionally taking top spot with a three-point lead over Inter Milan. Como, meanwhile, staged a dramatic comeback against Torino, scoring three goals in ten minutes to secure a 3-1 victory.
Lazio inflicted a 6-2 thrashing on Sassuolo on Tuesday evening, seizing provisional top spot in Serie A with a three-point lead over Inter Milan after matchday 9. Como, for their part, snatched a 3-1 victory from Torino thanks to a hat-trick scored in the final ten minutes.
On the pitch of a struggling Sassuolo, Lazio opened the scoring as early as the 2nd minute through Kenneth Taylor. After an own goal equalizer from Josip Sutalo (7th), the Romans quickly regained control: Gustav Isaksen (13th) and Romano Floriani extended the lead to 1-3. The expulsion of Kristian Thorstvedt (31st) reduced Sassuolo to ten men, but the hosts cut the deficit to 2-3 before the break.
Mattia Zaccagni was one of the architects of victory: providing assists on two occasions, he first set up the visitors to extend their lead just before half-time (2-4, 45+1) before laying on for Tijjani Noslin (55th). The latter capped off the evening with a brace (65th), bringing the final score to 2-6.
AS Roma also took advantage of the evening to claim third place. The Romans beat Cagliari 4-2, inflicting a third consecutive league defeat on their opponents. After falling behind from a penalty, the Giallorossi quickly turned the match around to win comfortably, sitting four points behind Lazio.
The most spectacular match of the evening took place in Turin. Como, managed by Cesc Fàbregas, found themselves trailing from the 24th minute and appeared destined for defeat for much of the game. But the Lombards scored three goals in ten minutes — in the 82nd, 87th and 90+2 — to completely turn the match around and win 3-1. This victory propels Como to fourth place in the standings.
