Mikel Arteta declined to address his visible confrontation with 16-year-old Max Dowman after the teenager was sent off for violent conduct in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town on penalties. The Arsenal manager said he needed to review the incident before commenting, but offered no public words of support for the forward as he walked off the pitch and straight down the tunnel.

Dowman had been making his second start of the season, following a breakthrough two-goal performance against Ipswich in the previous round. With Fleetwood — a League Two side — holding on for a penalty shootout, the game turned in the 85th minute when Dowman reacted to a heavy challenge from behind by Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal, kicking out in response and sparking a brawl between the two sides. Referee Michael Salisbury, without VAR, showed Dowman a straight red card for violent conduct.

Arteta, watching from the opposite touchline, appeared to have sharp words for Dowman as the teenager left the field. When asked about the exchange after the match, the Arsenal manager was guarded. “It’s difficult to see on the cameras like that so I’d prefer to watch it back properly so I can assess the situation,” he told reporters. Asked whether the young forward could learn from the experience, Arteta replied simply: “Yeah, we all learn from everything, yeah.”

The red card carries a three-match suspension, ruling Dowman out of Arsenal’s next three Premier League fixtures, beginning with Sunday’s trip to Liverpool. The timing compounds Arsenal’s problems on the right flank, with first-choice winger Bukayo Saka already expected to miss several weeks through injury.

The defeat itself was a significant upset, with Fleetwood eliminating one of the Premier League’s top sides from the Carabao Cup. For Dowman, a player who had announced himself to senior football with a stunning display against Ipswich, the night ended in controversy — and, it appears, a difficult conversation with his manager.
