Arsenal were eliminated from the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening by Fleetwood Town, a League Two side, following a penalty shootout (1-1, 5-3 on penalties) at Highbury Stadium. Bruno Guimarães’ miss sealed the Gunners’ elimination against an opponent playing two divisions below them.
Mikel Arteta had chosen to make wholesale changes to his squad against the thirteenth-placed League Two side, a gamble that quickly backfired. As early as the 21st minute, Aaron Loupal-Bi opened the scoring for the hosts (1-0), who then sat deep against a dominant Arsenal side in possession (78%) but remarkably blunt: just one shot on target from eleven attempts in the first half.
At half-time, Arteta brought in several key players to try to turn the situation around. Viktor Gyökeres quickly responded by equalizing in the 50th minute (1-1). More incisive, the Gunners created multiple chances without finding a way through, with Fleetwood’s defence and goalkeeper making decisive saves. The situation became even more complicated in the 85th minute when Max Dowman was sent off, leaving Arsenal to finish the match with ten men against eleven without that changing the score.
The penalty shootout turned into a London nightmare: all of Fleetwood’s takers converted their attempts, while Bruno Guimarães’ miss handed the upset to the hosts. An elimination that ranks among the most unexpected results of the season for Arteta’s club.
