Michael Carrick has signed a two-year contract as Manchester United head coach, the club confirmed on Friday, with the 44-year-old saying the prospect of managing his former side feels ‘pretty natural’ rather than daunting.

Speaking on United’s official YouTube channel alongside former team-mate Wayne Rooney, Carrick was asked how he was feeling about the appointment. His reply was characteristically understated. ‘It feels pretty natural,’ he said, delivered with the composed manner that defined his playing career at Old Trafford.

Carrick elaborated on that sense of familiarity, drawing on his 12 years as a player at the club. ‘It feels big on the outside but when you’re in it, it just feels… even though it’s different, the building’s different, some of the people are different, it’s kind of what you get used to from 20 years ago since I signed,’ he said. ‘So it’s all I’ve kind of known, really. So it’s a bigger role than what I’ve had before but actually it just feels like a natural step, to be fair. It’s nice to be here. A lot of responsibility but it’s good. I’m really enjoying it.’

The appointment marks United’s first British head coach in more than a decade. Carrick’s only previous senior management role was a two-and-a-half-year stint at Middlesbrough, where he guided the club to three consecutive top-half Championship finishes. That relatively modest CV stands in contrast to predecessors such as Sir Alex Ferguson, who had managed in Scotland for 12 years before arriving at Old Trafford.

Carrick won the FA Cup with United in 2016, beating Crystal Palace in the final, and remains a popular figure among supporters. His calm public demeanour since taking charge has been noted by fans who have watched several of his predecessors visibly struggle under the weight of expectations at one of football’s most scrutinised clubs.
