Carrick handed favourable Premier League opener as United target first title in years
Manchester United's 2026/27 Premier League season begins with back-to-back fixtures against newly promoted Hull City and Ipswich Town, offering Michael Carrick an ideal platform to launch a title challenge after CEO Omar Berrada publicly set winning the league as the club's near-term ambition.
Manchester United will open their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with consecutive matches against newly promoted sides Hull City and Ipswich Town, a draw that hands head coach Michael Carrick one of the more forgiving starts any title contender could hope for. The fixture release comes weeks after chief executive Omar Berrada stated publicly that winning the Premier League “ideally” within the next season is the club’s explicit target.
United travel to Hull City on the opening weekend. The Tigers secured promotion as shock play-off winners but are widely expected to struggle in the top flight, with a squad that looks thin for the division and a need to sell players to balance the books. Taking maximum points from that fixture is, by any measure, the minimum expectation.
Ipswich Town then visit Old Trafford in matchweek two. The Tractor Boys present a stiffer test than Hull, but their prospects have been complicated by the departure of manager Kieran McKenna, whose exit removes a significant part of what made Ipswich competitive in recent seasons.
A trip to Everton — a ground where United won last season — follows before Manchester City arrive at Old Trafford in what will be Enzo Maresca’s first Manchester derby as City head coach, replacing the outgoing Pep Guardiola. United will hope that catching City early, while Maresca’s methods are still bedding in after a summer of transition at the Etihad, works in their favour.
The opening ten games also include trips to Fulham, Leeds and Chelsea, with Tottenham and Bournemouth among the early visitors to Old Trafford — a schedule that, on paper, offers United every opportunity to build momentum before the fixture list toughens.
Carrick, appointed as permanent head coach, has given the impression of a manager unlikely to preside over the kind of mid-season collapse that has derailed United’s previous title bids. The club finished third last season, and a return to the Champions League — while a mark of progress — will add fixture congestion that could test squad depth across a long campaign.
Berrada’s public declaration of intent was notable for its directness, and the fixture computer has, at least for the opening weeks, delivered the conditions to back it up.
