Carragher warns Newcastle will sell whoever fetches most as Tonali and Guimaraes near £100m exits
Jamie Carragher believes Newcastle will cash in on whichever of Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes attracts the highest bid, with both midfielders valued at around £100m and Arsenal among the clubs circling.
Jamie Carragher has warned that Newcastle United are likely to sell whichever of Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes commands the larger fee this summer, with both midfielders attracting interest from Arsenal and other top clubs and each valued at around £100 million.
The departures would follow Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona, a loss Carragher described as part of a broader break-up of the squad Eddie Howe assembled. Tonali had already been the subject of a rejected bid from Tottenham, with Arsenal and Manchester City also credited with interest in the Italian. More recently, Arsenal have assessed the availability of club captain Guimaraes, prompting Carragher to suggest the decision may ultimately come down to pure economics.
“I think they probably lose one of them, and it would probably come down to who is getting offered the most money for,” the former Liverpool defender said. “Guimaraes and Tonali both leave a huge hole for Newcastle to fill.”
Carragher was careful not to dismiss Guimaraes’s desire to stay, acknowledging that the Brazilian may have grown unsettled watching teammates depart. “Maybe he’s getting a little bit frustrated at seeing all his mates getting linked with moves,” he said, while also noting the midfielder’s standing as a regular starter for Brazil in World Cup qualifying as evidence of his quality at the highest level.
On Tonali, Carragher suggested the Italian has long appeared the more likely of the two to leave St James’ Park, with the January window already generating significant speculation before Tottenham’s bid was turned down.
The prospect of losing both players in the same window has raised fresh questions about the direction of Newcastle’s project under their Saudi Arabian ownership. Carragher was blunt in his assessment: “If Anthony Gordon goes and Tonali, I think if you lose any more, it’s probably too much then, really.”
Newcastle have not publicly confirmed any bids for either player, and no deals have been announced.
