Cape Verde secured a 0-0 draw against Spain on Monday evening in Atlanta, scoring one of the early shocks of the 2026 World Cup. But with just one point on the board, the Blue Sharks remain very far from qualification for the Round of 16.

The expansion of the tournament to 48 teams has given several nations their first World Cup appearance. Cape Verde did not waste its grand debut: holding Spain to a draw, presented by many as the competition’s top favorite, is a remarkable achievement. The hero of the evening was goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, who had around 50,000 Instagram followers before the match and now has more than 7 million — more than Victor Wembanyama.

But emotion alone is not enough to guarantee what comes next. According to Football Meets Data, with two points total, Cape Verde’s qualification probability does not exceed 1.9%. However, three or four points would make the ticket to the Round of 16 practically assured.

The roadmap for Ryan Mendes and his teammates is therefore clear: they will need to win against Uruguay or Saudi Arabia, or secure two more draws, to extend their adventure beyond the group stage. A considerable challenge, but not insurmountable for a team that has just proven it can make even the best doubt themselves.
