Ismaël Koné was stretchered off with a serious-looking lower leg injury during Canada’s 6-0 demolition of Qatar in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BC Place in Vancouver. The midfielder was hurt in the 50th minute and left the field with an air cast fitted around his injured leg, bringing play to a halt for several minutes.

The injury stemmed from a late challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo, who was shown a red card — Qatar’s second dismissal of the match. Madibo was visibly distraught before being sent off, and several Canada players moved to console him before play resumed.

The emotional moment did not derail Canada’s performance. Nathan Saliba added a goal in the 64th minute and paid tribute to his stricken teammate by holding up Koné’s jersey in celebration.

Koné, 23, has been a cornerstone of Canada’s midfield since making his international debut four years ago. In 42 appearances for Les Rouges, he has scored four goals, won back-to-back Canada Soccer Young Player of the Year awards in 2022 and 2023, featured in three matches at the 2022 World Cup, and helped Canada reach the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa América, where they finished fourth.

At club level, Koné began his career with CF Montreal in MLS before moving to Europe, where he had spells at Watford and Marseille. He currently plays for Sassuolo in Serie A.

No official diagnosis has been confirmed, and Canada have not yet provided a timeline for his recovery. Given the nature of the injury and the air cast applied on the pitch, his involvement in the remainder of Canada’s World Cup campaign is in serious doubt.
