Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly rallied behind reported transfer target Rafael Leao after the AC Milan winger was shown a straight red card for swiping at Chile’s Ivan Roman during Portugal’s World Cup warm-up friendly at Jamor.

Leao addressed the incident on Instagram, writing: “Regarding my sending off, I simply wanted to protect my teammate and never intended to hurt the opponent. Thank you to all the Portuguese fans who were at Jamor; the atmosphere was incredible. We move forward together.”

Fernandes, rather than distancing himself from the controversy, replied to the post with a single word — “Together” — a gesture that signals the United skipper’s solidarity with his compatriot at a moment when Leao has faced scrutiny over his composure.

The 26-year-old forward has done little to dampen speculation that he will leave Milan at the end of the season. Speaking to Sport TV, Leao was candid about his desire for a new environment: “I need a new challenge. In Italy, the league is evolving, but for my style of football, the Premier League or La Liga would better showcase my talent and me as a player. If the opportunity in the Premier League were to come my way, I would be very happy: I think I would be able to match my talent with players who are at a very high level.”

Those comments represent a clear signal of intent from a player who endured a difficult campaign at the San Siro and appears ready to move on.

Separately, United’s pursuit of Ederson has encountered a complication. The goalkeeper is believed to be close to joining Old Trafford but his recent call-up to Brazil’s World Cup 2026 squad has delayed the formalities, with the tournament likely to push back several of United’s planned summer business.

With multiple targets tied up in international duty, United’s decision-makers face a waiting game before they can finalise the squad overhaul that has been building throughout the summer window.
