Bruno Fernandes idol story adds intrigue to Mateus Fernandes' £80m United transfer pursuit
West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, valued at over £80m, is being chased by Manchester United, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Liverpool this summer. A resurfaced anecdote about his admiration for United captain Bruno Fernandes adds an unusual personal dimension to the race for his signature.
Manchester United face stiff competition from Real Madrid, Tottenham and Liverpool for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the relegated Hammers demanding in excess of £80 million for the 21-year-old Portugal international this summer — a valuation United are reportedly reluctant to meet.
Despite the financial and competitive hurdles, a personal factor could yet give United an edge. In a 2024 interview with CNN Portugal, Fernandes recalled a formative moment from his teenage years at Sporting CP’s academy when he spotted Bruno Fernandes — then a first-team player at the club — watching from the sidelines during an Under-16 derby against Benfica.
“I remember one time when we were playing against Benfica, Under-16s. I’ll always have that moment in my memory,” Fernandes said. “He was off the field — we were playing on one field and he was on the other field watching the game. I remember seeing him and, suddenly, starting to assert myself on the field, yelling at everyone, just so he would notice. I don’t know if he remembers that moment but it’s something that stuck in my memory.”
The prospect of playing alongside his compatriot and long-time idol at Old Trafford could make United a more attractive destination, should manager Michael Carrick’s side agree a fee with West Ham.
The Hammers have little choice but to sell following their relegation to the Championship, though it remains unclear whether the club face immediate financial pressure to complete a deal this month. Fernandes joined West Ham last summer from Southampton for an initial £38 million.
According to The Times, Jose Mourinho has requested that Real Madrid pursue the midfielder, while The Athletic reports that Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi is actively pushing to sign him, with Spurs described as being ‘very close’ to striking a deal.
Whether Fernandes’ admiration for Bruno proves decisive against the lure of Real Madrid or Tottenham’s project under De Zerbi remains to be seen, but it gives United a sentimental card to play in what is shaping up to be one of the summer’s most competitive transfer battles.
