The Netherlands secured top spot in World Cup Group F with a commanding 3-1 win over Tunisia at Kansas City on Wednesday, as Brian Brobbey’s third goal of the tournament helped Ronald Koeman’s side into the last 32 with a game to spare in style.

The Dutch were ruthless from the opening whistle, establishing a two-goal lead within seven minutes. Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently turned a cross into his own net in the third minute, and Brobbey quickly doubled the advantage, tapping home a headed knockdown from Virgil van Dijk following a free-kick.

Tunisia briefly threatened a revival early in the second half when Hazem Mastouri headed a corner into the bottom-left corner to halve the deficit. The Dutch response was immediate, however, with Jan Paul van Hecke restoring the two-goal cushion from a corner of his own to effectively end the contest.

Tunisia created sporadic chances thereafter but could not alter the scoreline, finishing the group stage without a point and exiting the tournament. The Netherlands, meanwhile, progressed as Group F winners.

Koeman was satisfied with how his side managed the occasion. “I wanted first place in the group, and we finished that way,” he said. “I think it had to do with the fact that we went 2-0 up very quickly. That can be a problem against a stronger opponent and Morocco are an attacking team.”

Tunisia coach Hervé Renard offered a frank verdict on his side’s campaign. “We were not at the level for this World Cup, this is clear, there is no discussion. It’s a big tournament with very good teams, especially in this group — it was a very tough group.”

In the group’s other final fixture, Japan and Sweden drew 1-1 in Dallas to both advance to the knockout rounds. Japan finish second behind the Netherlands, while Sweden progress as the top third-placed side — a result that further dims Scotland’s hopes of reaching the last 32.
