Brazil call-up for Ederson days after £38m United move adds World Cup spotlight to Old Trafford deal
Ederson earned a surprise recall to the Brazil squad just five days after Manchester United confirmed his £38.3m signing from Atalanta, ending a 16-month international absence and handing the midfielder a World Cup stage ahead of his official arrival at Old Trafford.
Ederson’s £38.3m move from Atalanta to Manchester United, confirmed last week, has already carried an unexpected dividend: a recall to the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup, ending a 16-month absence from the Seleção.
Carlo Ancelotti named the 26-year-old in his squad on Sunday — five days after United announced the deal — with an injury to full-back Wesley opening the door. The nature of the replacement suggests Ancelotti has decided he needs a more dynamic midfield option rather than a like-for-like cover, and United’s willingness to pay a significant fee may have served as a timely reminder of Ederson’s qualities.
The timing matters because it could have complicated the transfer. A World Cup call-up, with potentially eight games if Brazil progress all the way, might have attracted rival interest and triggered a bidding war. United had already benefited from Atletico Madrid withdrawing from the race, giving them a clear run to agree an initial £35m fee with Atalanta. Ederson will sign a contract at Old Trafford until 2030 with the option of a further year, though the deal will be formally completed after the tournament once he has undergone his medical.
Ederson’s international record is modest — three caps during four years at Atalanta, totalling just 107 minutes across friendlies in June and July 2024 and a World Cup qualifier against Argentina in 2025. With only one year remaining on his Atalanta contract and no extension in sight, the Italian club’s negotiating position was weakened, which helped United secure the fee they wanted.
In Brazil’s midfield, Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes are near-certain starters, with Lucas Paqueta the most likely candidate for the third slot. But competition beyond that trio is thin, and across a full tournament Ederson is likely to see minutes. He could even share a pitch with Casemiro, the veteran he is effectively being brought in to succeed at Old Trafford.
For United supporters, the World Cup offers an early look at a player who won’t officially join the squad until after the tournament. For the club’s recruitment team, it is a chance to assess how Ederson handles the pressure of representing the most high-profile national team in the world — a useful data point before he steps into a dressing room that will carry its own weight of expectation.
