Bowen apologises to West Ham fans for 'embarrassment and pain' of Premier League relegation
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has issued a public apology to supporters after the club's 14-year stay in the Premier League ended on Sunday. A 3-0 win over Leeds proved insufficient to overhaul Tottenham and avoid the drop to the Championship.
Jarrod Bowen has publicly apologised to West Ham supporters after the club’s relegation from the Premier League ended a 14-year spell in the top flight. A 3-0 victory over Leeds on Sunday came too late in the season to overhaul Tottenham, confirming the Hammers’ drop into the Championship.
“It’s hard to post something like this when all you’re feeling is embarrassment and pain,” the West Ham captain wrote on Instagram. “I could write loads trying to explain where it all went wrong this season, but honestly what you deserve from me is an apology. We just weren’t good enough. Simple as that. And that’s why the season ended the way it did.”
The relegation arrives just three years after the club’s most celebrated modern achievement — Bowen’s goal in Prague against Fiorentina that secured the Conference League title in 2023. The contrast was not lost on the captain. “Winning that trophy in Prague was the best night of my career,” he wrote. “Sunday was the worst.”
Bowen was careful to direct no blame at the supporters, whose backing remained consistent throughout a miserable campaign. “To the fans, you didn’t let us down once. The support home and away never changed, even when things weren’t good enough from us on the pitch. We should have given you more. You deserved more.”
Despite the pain, Bowen expressed confidence in the club’s ability to respond. “One thing I know about this club is that it has the desire and fight to bounce back from this. This club belongs in the Premier League and deserves to be back there as soon as possible.”
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who took charge in September with the side sitting 19th, is expected to leave the club this week following meetings with the hierarchy.
