Bonfim cut by UFC after third weight miss and fourth straight stoppage loss
Ismael Bonfim has been released by the UFC following a first-round knockout loss to Francisco Prado at UFC Vegas 122, where he was 7.5 pounds over the lightweight limit — his third weight-related failure with the promotion.
Ismael Bonfim’s UFC tenure is over after a weekend that encapsulated everything that went wrong during his time with the promotion. The 30-year-old Brazilian was cut from the roster following a first-round knockout defeat to Francisco Prado on the preliminary card of UFC Vegas 122 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas — a bout he entered 7.5 pounds overweight.
The loss was Bonfim’s fourth consecutive stoppage defeat inside the octagon, capping a promotional record of 2-5 that stands in stark contrast to the 18-3 mark he carried into his UFC debut after earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series. Beyond the losing streak, weight-management issues plagued his entire run: he officially missed weight twice and had one fight cancelled outright due to weight-cut problems, making Saturday’s miss his third such failure.
Bonfim, known by the nickname “Marreta”, addressed the defeat on social media on Sunday — before news of his release broke — with a defiant statement written in Portuguese.
“There are no excuses, no shame, and certainly no reason to give up,” he wrote. “We made it this far by taking the hardest road, facing battles that few people know about, overcoming fears, breaking barriers, and fighting battles that go far beyond what happens inside the octagon. The outcome of a battle does not define a warrior’s worth, and a loss will never be enough to erase the entire story we’ve built.”
He continued: “I keep my head held high, my heart at peace, and my faith stronger than ever. Because those who know where they came from, everything they’ve been through, and how hard they’ve had to fight to get here don’t give up because of one result. My story doesn’t end here. God is still writing the next chapters, and I trust Him completely.”
Bonfim’s departure underlines the UFC’s diminishing tolerance for repeated weight-miss offences, particularly when combined with a prolonged run of losses. At 30, he will likely look to rebuild his career in a regional or secondary promotion, where his pre-UFC record suggests he retains the tools to compete at a high level if the weight issues can be resolved.
