Bielsa fumes at reporters over viral FIFA photo after Uruguay's draw with Saudi Arabia
Marcelo Bielsa refused to explain his viral FIFA World Cup photo at his post-match press conference, insisting 'I'm not a model' after Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in their tournament opener.
Marcelo Bielsa clashed with reporters over his viral FIFA World Cup photograph at his post-match press conference on Monday, declaring he had no obligation to explain himself after Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in their opening Group match.
The 70-year-old Uruguay manager had already attracted widespread attention for staring at the ground during his official pre-tournament photo shoot, with the image spreading rapidly across social media. When a journalist raised the subject after the match, Bielsa was visibly agitated.
“I don’t have to give any explanation,” he said. “The picture was taken the way it was taken. I’m not a model. I have no answer for that. Should I also explain why I don’t look at those who are speaking now?”
Bielsa later returned to the subject unprompted, broadening his frustration into a wider point about accountability. “I believe there’s a limit in terms of what we need to explain,” he added. “Some situations do not need to be explained. We have no obligation to behave as models. Those things have no foundation. I did nothing wrong.”
The press conference came at the end of a turbulent 24 hours for the South American side. Uruguay’s travel plans were thrown into disarray before the match when paperwork issues grounded their aircraft, delaying their arrival in Florida. Uruguay’s FA blamed FIFA for the chaos, while FIFA attributed the problem to an airline permitting error.
On the pitch, Uruguay entered the match as favourites but struggled to impose themselves in the first half, conceding to Abdulelah Al-Amri’s opener before Maximiliano Araujo levelled with ten minutes remaining. Despite finishing the game with 27 shots, Uruguay were frustrated by a combination of poor finishing and an outstanding performance from Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais.
Bielsa, who has confirmed he will leave the Uruguay role when the tournament concludes, has a history of public criticism directed at football’s governing bodies. He previously condemned the commercialisation of the sport and raised concerns about security and pitch conditions at last year’s Copa America.
Uruguay will need to regroup quickly if they are to advance from the group stage, with the dropped points against Saudi Arabia leaving little margin for error.
