Bielsa caught out by fair-play controversy in Uruguay's 2-2 draw with Cape Verde
Uruguay drew 2-2 with Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup group stage, but a controversial sequence in the first half has drawn criticism. Uruguayan midfielder Federico Viñas was accused of exploiting an injured Cape Verde player to help set up Maximilliano Araújo's 44th-minute equalizer, sparking outrage from Cape Verde's manager Bubista, who criticized Bielsa's apparent departure from the fair-play principles he has long championed.
Uruguay could do no better than a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde on Sunday evening in the 2026 World Cup group stage, but it is a controversial sequence late in the first half that has captured all the attention.
While play was stopped, Uruguayan midfielder Federico Viñas was helping Cape Verde’s Telmo Arcanjo ease his cramps. But as soon as play resumed, Viñas abruptly released his opponent’s leg to participate in the move that led to Maximilliano Araújo’s 44th-minute equalizer (1-1). The goal was allowed to stand, and the incident immediately sparked outrage from the Cape Verde camp.
Cape Verde manager Bubista made no attempt to hide his disappointment, directly targeting the contradiction with Marcelo Bielsa’s image. “I was disappointed, because Bielsa had taught us what fair-play was,” he said. “Whether in his press conferences, or in the way his teams play.” The jab is all the sharper given that the Argentine coach has built himself a reputation over the years as a guardian of football’s moral values. In 2019, while managing Leeds, Bielsa himself ordered his players to allow Aston Villa to score after an opponent had remained on the ground during an action that led to a goal for his team.
On the sporting front, Uruguay’s situation is concerning. After an opening draw against Saudi Arabia (1-1), La Celeste have yet to win and will likely need to beat Spain to have any hope of reaching the round of 16. The controversy surrounding Viñas’s gesture only adds pressure to a group already under tension.
