Bielik grabs child by the throat in stands, Cardiff defends player

Krystian Bielik grabbed a young Portsmouth supporter by the throat during Cardiff’s away trip to Fratton Park on Saturday, in a match that ended in a 2-0 defeat in the 5th round of the Championship.

In the 70th minute, the 28-year-old Polish defensive midfielder, who previously played for Arsenal, seized a child in the stands who was slow to return a ball that had gone out of play. The boy, who had responded to the footballer with a slap, was eventually ejected from the stadium along with his parents by security staff. Play was interrupted for several minutes amid general confusion, but Bielik received no caution or sanction from the referee.

Cardiff’s manager defended his player after the match. “The referee and his team managed the incident impeccably. Players are often confronted with unacceptable behaviour,” he said. This interpretation contrasts with the footage released, which clearly shows Bielik initiating the physical gesture toward the child.

The English Football Association’s disciplinary commission is expected to examine the incident. A sanction against the midfielder remains possible, regardless of the absence of a card on the pitch.
