Bettors pile on USMNT for 'meaningless' Türkiye clash despite rotation fears
With the USA already through as Group D winners and Türkiye eliminated, Thursday's World Cup dead-rubber has still drawn record betting volumes — 87% of wagers and 95% of money at Caesars on the hosts, even as Pochettino weighs heavy rotation.
The USA’s final 2026 World Cup group-stage match against Türkiye on Thursday carries no competitive stakes for either side, yet American bettors are treating it like a final, driving record wagering volumes at major sportsbooks.
The USMNT enters the 10 p.m. ET kickoff having already secured first place in Group D with a perfect 2-0 record, following a 4-1 demolition of Paraguay and a 2-0 win over Australia. Türkiye, meanwhile, sits at 0-2 and cannot advance regardless of the result.
Despite the dead-rubber nature of the fixture, Caesars Sportsbook reports that 87% of wagers and 95% of money in three-way betting is on the United States. The USA vs. Australia match last Friday set a record for the most bets Caesars has ever taken on a single soccer game, and the same bettors appear to be returning.
“We have seen that, regardless of the matchup, when the USA is playing, the support is always going to show up,” said Mark Bickerdike, Caesars Sports’ head of soccer trading. “We’re still seeing a lot of patriotism. People are enriched by the previous two matches.”
The three-way moneyline has shifted considerably since it opened. After the USA’s win over Australia and before Türkiye’s 1-0 loss to Paraguay, the line opened at USA +135 / Türkiye +177 / Draw +255. It has since moved to USA -113 / Türkiye +250 / Draw +290, reflecting both the public money and Türkiye’s lack of advancement incentive.
The match does carry genuine selection uncertainty, however. Four USA players — Folarin Balogun, Tyler Adams, Chris Richardson, and Antonee Robinson — are each on a yellow card and risk suspension for the Round of 32 if booked again. Christian Pulisic is also managing a calf injury, giving coach Mauricio Pochettino reason to rotate heavily.
“One of the biggest challenges for bookmakers and customers is predicting the lineups,” Bickerdike said. “It’s a good opportunity for the U.S. to rest players, so that they’re more fit.”
Bickerdike does not expect Türkiye to simply go through the motions. “Türkiye will want to go out on a better note,” he said, predicting a more open game than the group stage has produced so far. “I’d expect a free-flowing game, a bit more of a high total than previous matches, because there is no risk for either team.” Caesars has set the total at 2.5, with the Over priced as a -139 favourite.
A USA win would also mark a historic first — the USMNT has never gone 3-0 in World Cup group play.
