Berrada outlines United's summer transfer plan as Ederson deal nears completion
Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has set out a disciplined transfer strategy for the summer, promising to replicate last year's recruitment model. A £35 million agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson is already understood to be in place.
Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has declared the club has a “clear plan” for the summer transfer window, with a £35 million fee already understood to be agreed with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.
Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Berrada said United’s approach would mirror the previous summer’s recruitment, which brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens. “I think the template of what we did last summer will be replicated,” he said. “We have a clear plan. We want a mix of experience and youth, a mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also players who are doing very well outside the Premier League.”
Berrada was equally firm on financial discipline, warning against allowing external pressures to shape the club’s decisions. “We have to be really disciplined, it’s simple. We know what we can invest and we have to stick to that,” he said. “It’s very important that you don’t let the market or the agents dictate what we should be doing.”
The executive also addressed the permanent appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach, confirmed last month. The 44-year-old took charge on an interim basis following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January and guided United to a third-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification. “I think he’s earned the right to continue leading the team over the next two years or more,” Berrada said, describing Carrick as “very calm but also very driven” and well-suited to the club’s longer-term ambitions.
Separately, United confirmed that third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract. The 40-year-old, who rejoined the club from Aston Villa in 2021, has made three first-team appearances during that spell. “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” Heaton said.
