Berrada confirms Manchester United plan five signings to mirror last summer's overhaul
CEO Omar Berrada says United will replicate the approach that brought Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko and Lammens to Old Trafford, targeting five new signings with a mix of Premier League-proven and overseas talent.
Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has confirmed the club intend to sign approximately five players in the upcoming summer window, describing a “clear plan” that mirrors the strategy behind last summer’s £200 million rebuild.
Speaking on United’s YouTube channel, Berrada said the club would again pursue a blend of Premier League-tested experience and players excelling outside England. “The template for what we did last summer will be replicated in many ways,” he said. “We want a mix of players that have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also players that are doing very well outside the Premier League. But we will always do it within our terms and ensuring that whatever decision we take is not just for the short term but also for the long term.”
Last summer United spent more than £200 million on four arrivals: Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves for £62.5 million, Bryan Mbeumo arrived from Brentford for £71 million, Benjamin Sesko was signed from RB Leipzig for £73 million, and goalkeeper Senne Lammens completed a £18 million move from Royal Antwerp. All four impressed during their debut campaigns and contributed to the club finishing third in the Premier League and securing Champions League qualification under Michael Carrick, who took over midway through the season.
On the outgoing side, Alejandro Garnacho was sold to Chelsea for £40 million and Antony joined Real Betis for £21 million, while Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund were among those sent out on loan. Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans all departed at the end of their contracts.
Berrada acknowledged that transfer windows rarely unfold exactly as planned, stressing the need for adaptability. “You always go into a window, you don’t know how you’re going to come out of it, but you have to be really prepared,” he said. “There could be exits that we’re not expecting, there could be opportunities in the market that perhaps weren’t there at the beginning of the window. So we have to be ready — agile and flexible.”
He added that sporting director Jason Wilcox and his recruitment team are “very well set up” to execute the strategy, with United’s return to the Champions League adding both urgency and financial leverage to their summer plans.
