Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid on free transfer after nine trophy-laden years at Man City
Bernardo Silva has signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid after leaving Manchester City as a free agent. The 31-year-old Portugal international won 20 trophies at the Etihad, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
Bernardo Silva has agreed a two-year deal with Real Madrid after departing Manchester City as a free agent, the Spanish club confirmed. The 31-year-old will officially become a Madrid player when his City contract expires at the end of June, with the agreement running until 30 June 2028.
Real Madrid’s statement was unambiguous: “Real Madrid CF and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.” Silva had been strongly linked with the move since announcing in April that he would leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season, making his arrival on a free transfer a notable piece of business for the La Liga giants given his consistent quality at the highest level.
Silva joined City from Monaco for £43m in May 2017 and spent nine years under Pep Guardiola, establishing himself as one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation. He departs with 20 trophies, a haul that includes six Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, five Carabao Cups, a Club World Cup and a European Super Cup. His final piece of silverware came in May’s FA Cup final, a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley.
In a farewell message posted to Instagram in April, Silva reflected warmly on his time in Manchester. “When I arrived nine years ago, I was following a dream of a little boy, wanting to succeed in life, wanting to achieve great things,” he wrote. “This city and this club gave me much more than that, much more than I ever hoped for. What we won and achieved together is a legacy that will forever be cherished in my heart. The Centurions, the domestic quadruple, the Treble, the Four In A Row and much more… It wasn’t that bad.”
At 31, Silva arrives at the Bernabéu with his reputation fully intact and joins a Madrid squad that will be looking to reclaim La Liga and challenge again in Europe. His experience of winning at the very highest level makes him a low-risk, high-reward addition for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
