Bergvall pushes for Tottenham exit as Spurs chase Tonali and Mateus Fernandes
Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham he wants to leave this summer, just two years after joining from Djurgarden for £8.5m. The 20-year-old Sweden international, valued at around £52m, is seeking a new challenge while Spurs simultaneously pursue Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to leave the club this summer, creating a significant midfield reshuffle at a side that narrowly avoided Premier League relegation last season.
The 20-year-old joined Spurs from Djurgarden in 2024 for £8.5m but struggled for consistent minutes during the closing stages of 2025/26, largely featuring as a second-half substitute following Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment as manager. According to The Athletic, Bergvall — currently representing Sweden at the 2026 World Cup in North America — is now actively seeking a move elsewhere.
Chelsea and Aston Villa had previously shown interest in the midfielder, though Spurs were unwilling to sell at that point. Whether those clubs retain their interest remains unclear. Bergvall is contracted until 2031 and carries a market valuation of approximately £52m, though his eagerness to move could give potential buyers some negotiating leverage.
The development adds complexity to Tottenham’s summer rebuild under De Zerbi. The club finished 17th in the Premier League last term, surviving relegation only by virtue of a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day of the season.
Spurs are understood to be targeting significant reinforcements in midfield. The Athletic reports that the club are prepared to break their existing wage structure to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, who impressed despite the Magpies’ difficult campaign. However, with Newcastle valuing the Italian at around £100m and determined to retain him, completing that deal is far from certain.
West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has also emerged as a target. The 21-year-old could become available following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League, with the east London club potentially looking to reduce their wage bill. Spurs have reportedly approached West Ham over a deal, though the relegated side still value Fernandes at approximately £80m.
With Bergvall potentially departing and two expensive midfield targets proving difficult to secure, De Zerbi faces a demanding first transfer window as he attempts to overhaul a squad that came within a result of dropping into the Championship.
