Rio Ngumoha admitted he was lost for words after Jude Bellingham presented him with his first England cap in the dressing room following his international debut against New Zealand, with the Real Madrid midfielder predicting a glittering future for the Liverpool teenager.

Ngumoha came off the bench at half-time to make his Three Lions bow, capping a meteoric rise that has seen him establish himself as one of English football’s most exciting young talents. After the final whistle, a clip posted to social media captured the moment Bellingham sought out the winger to mark the occasion.

“Congratulations on an amazing debut,” Bellingham told him. “I think we all enjoyed watching it, and obviously you’re going to have a really bright future at your club and hopefully with us as well. It’s a pleasure to give it to you because I know there’ll be so many more. So, congratulations.”

A visibly emotional Ngumoha replied: “Thank you everyone. I’m happy. I’m speechless! I just want to say thank you. We keep going!”

The 19-year-old made 29 appearances for Liverpool last season and has been called up for England’s pre-World Cup friendlies by head coach Thomas Tuchel, who is using the games to give a group of young players exposure to the international setup. Ngumoha is not part of Tuchel’s 26-man squad for the tournament itself, nor was he expected to be at this stage of his development.

Also included in the wider group are Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Fulham midfielder Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille from Arsenal.

Ngumoha’s breakthrough at club level arrived in August when he scored a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle at St James’ Park, and he has not looked back since. His form has attracted serious attention beyond England’s borders, with Bayern Munich reportedly identifying him as one of their primary summer targets — a development that could hand Liverpool a significant retention battle.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was effusive in his praise after the debut. “He was quality, nothing fazed him,” Pickford told the Press Association. “He’s had a really good season at Liverpool and the manager gave him his debut and he showed how good he is.”
