Bella Mir explains mother's viral social media outburst after historic DWCS upset loss
Bella Mir has spoken out about her mother Jennifer's viral social media reaction following Bella's unanimous decision loss to Alex Apodaca on Dana White's Contender Series — the biggest upset in the show's history. Bella attributed the outburst to emotion and alcohol, noting Jennifer later apologised.
Bella Mir has broken her silence on her mother’s viral social media meltdown, saying Jennifer Mir was simply overwhelmed by emotion — and alcohol — after Bella suffered the biggest upset in Dana White’s Contender Series history, losing a unanimous decision to Alex Apodaca on Week 3 of Season 10.
Mir (4-1) entered the fight as a -6000 favourite, the shortest price ever recorded on the DWCS, against the 5-1 Apodaca. The closely contested decision went against her, handing Apodaca a UFC contract and sending shockwaves through the MMA community.
In the aftermath, Jennifer Mir took to social media to lash out at Apodaca and the judges. She later issued a public apology, acknowledging she had acted out of a desire to defend her daughter from the wave of online criticism Bella was already facing.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Bella said she understood exactly where her mother’s reaction came from — and even found a silver lining in it.
“My mom commenting on stuff obviously didn’t really help the situation, but she honestly kind of took the fire off of me,” Bella said. “Everyone started hating on her more than hating on me. It’s crazy. It’s like, ‘Mom, you literally protect me in every situation I’ve ever lived in and you literally protected me more in this one.’ I don’t even know how she could have done that, but she did.”
Bella was candid about the role alcohol played in her mother’s response, while stopping short of excusing the posts entirely.
“I think it was just the heat of the moment,” she said. “My mom is very emotional… And obviously drinking that night didn’t really help. I think she was just raging out. She obviously apologised to everyone and admitted that she made a mistake and that’s the best anyone can do after making a mistake: own up to it.”
Jennifer’s apology echoed that sentiment, with her acknowledging the reaction was driven by a desire to shield her daughter rather than a genuine grievance with the result. Bella, for her part, appears to have moved on from the controversy with her relationship with her mother intact — and with a degree of gratitude for the unintentional deflection.
