Belgium demolish USA 4-1 to end home World Cup dream in round of 16
The United States were outclassed 4-1 by Belgium on Monday, crashing out of the World Cup in the round of 16 on home soil. Former USA international Stu Holden said the moment proved too big for key players, singling out a poor night from Christian Pulisic.
Belgium ended the United States’ World Cup on home soil with a commanding 4-1 victory in the round of 16 on Monday, a result that former USA international Stu Holden described as a painfully familiar disappointment. Three of Belgium’s four goals stemmed directly from American turnovers in their own lower third, exposing the nerves that ultimately undid the host nation.
Holden, speaking after the match, was unsparing in his assessment. “It’s a familiar feeling. We’ve been here before. I think that’s the most disheartening part of this because we get wrapped up in the moment,” he said. “They shot themselves in the foot too many times. But once again, it comes to the moment being too big for a lot of these players.”
The defeat stings in part because this USA squad had shown genuine progress across the tournament. They won three of their four matches — the most victories the United States had ever recorded in a single World Cup — and demonstrated resilience in the round of 32, doubling their lead over Bosnia and Herzegovina even after striker Folarin Balogun was reduced to ten men by a red card.
Yet all of that momentum evaporated against Belgium. A particularly damaging moment came when goalkeeper Matt Freese hesitated attempting to clear the ball, allowing Belgium to steal possession and score. Holden pointed to that kind of uncharacteristic error as evidence that the occasion overwhelmed the squad.
“Guys were doing things that were uncharacteristic to their normal things and what we’ve seen in this tournament,” Holden said. “They just didn’t look like themselves tonight.”
Among the individual underperformers, Holden reserved pointed criticism for star midfielder Christian Pulisic, who struggled to impose himself from the opening minutes. “We just didn’t get big games from our big players tonight. Pulisic had a really tough night — even from the first minute of the game,” Holden said, noting that three of Pulisic’s first five touches were turnovers.
The round of 16 has now become a recurring ceiling for the United States men’s team at major tournaments, and Holden acknowledged that closing that gap will require players who can handle the weight of the biggest stages. “That will change over time,” he said, “but I think that’s the only way you can explain that.”
