BBC to air spoiler-free England vs Mexico World Cup replay for fans who miss the 1am kick-off
England fans unable to stay up for the 1am BST kick-off against Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 can watch a full, spoiler-free replay on BBC Two from 7.10am on Monday, with Kelly Cates presenting alongside Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart.
England supporters who cannot face a 1am start will have a second chance to watch the World Cup round-of-16 clash against Mexico, with BBC Two broadcasting a full, spoiler-free replay from 7.10am BST on Monday morning.
The knockout tie takes place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, kicking off at 1am BST (8am local time). Pubs have been granted permission to stay open for the occasion, but the BBC has confirmed an alternative for those who choose to sleep through it.
BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski explained the reasoning behind the decision. “World Cup knockout football is absolutely unmissable, but a 1am kick-off isn’t realistic for everyone,” he said. “We wanted to make sure there was an option for those fans who just can’t stay up to experience one of England’s biggest matches live. So, whether you’re staying up to watch every minute live or waking up to catch every moment spoiler-free, BBC Sport has you covered this Monday.”
A full rerun of the match will also be available from 6am BST on Monday. Kelly Cates will present the programme, with former England internationals Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart on punditry duty.
England manager Thomas Tuchel had previously encouraged parents to allow their children to stay up and watch the game, even if it meant missing school the following day.
