The BBC has announced a spoiler-free catch-up service for England supporters unable to stay awake for the Three Lions’ World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico, which kicks off at 1am on Monday morning.

Thomas Tuchel’s side booked their place in the knockout rounds on Wednesday (July 1) after a nervy evening at Atlanta Stadium against the Democratic Republic of Congo. DR Congo led through Brian Cipenga’s eighth-minute strike before Harry Kane rescued England with two goals in eleven second-half minutes to seal the win.

England now face a stiff test against a Mexico side that remains unbeaten and has yet to concede a goal at the tournament, playing in front of their home crowd at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The late kick-off — with the match unlikely to finish before 3am, and potentially later if extra time is required due to hydration breaks built into the schedule — prompted the BBC to act.

Fans who cannot make it through the night will be able to access a spoiler-free catch-up experience on BBC iPlayer, with the broadcaster taking care to use cryptic thumbnails that avoid revealing the result. A full re-run will also air on BBC Two at 7.10am, and an extended 15-minute highlights package will be available on iPlayer and the BBC Sport Football YouTube channel.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, said: “World Cup knockout football is absolutely unmissable, but a 1am kick-off isn’t realistic for everyone. We wanted to make sure there was an option for those fans who just can’t stay up to experience one of England’s biggest matches live.”

Presenting the coverage is Kelly Cates, who has taken on the role of the BBC’s main World Cup host following Gary Lineker’s departure from the corporation. She is joined in the studio by former England internationals Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Micah Richards, while Alan Shearer partners commentator Guy Mowbray at the Azteca Stadium.

The announcement follows Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s decision on Thursday (June 3) to allow pubs across England to remain open until 5am for the match, giving fans the option of watching the game in a social setting regardless of the hour.
