Bayern Munich target Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha in summer transfer pursuit
Bayern Munich are exploring a move for Liverpool's 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, with manager Vincent Kompany driving interest in the teenager who made 29 appearances for the Reds last season. Liverpool, who hold Ngumoha under contract until 2028, have no intention of selling.
Bayern Munich are targeting Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha in what would be one of the more ambitious teenage transfers of the summer window, according to The Athletic. The Bundesliga club’s manager Vincent Kompany is among those pushing the pursuit, though no formal contact has yet been made between the two clubs.
Ngumoha, 17, signed his first professional contract at Anfield in September, tying him to Liverpool until June 2028. The club have no plans to sell the prospect and view him as a key part of their future, having deliberately chosen not to replace Luis Diaz — sold to Bayern 12 months ago — in part because of Ngumoha’s emerging quality.
The winger made 29 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing two goals and an assist. His debut goal, a composed first-time finish that eliminated Newcastle in stoppage time, underlined the maturity that has made him a favourite with the Anfield crowd. Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot was met with boos last month when he substituted Ngumoha during a draw with Chelsea.
Ngumoha is currently with the England squad in Florida ahead of the 2026 World Cup, further evidence of the rapid trajectory that has attracted Bayern’s attention.
At the Allianz Arena, Kompany already has Harry Kane leading the line, with Diaz and Michael Olise providing wide support. Bayern are looking to add further depth and directness to that forward unit, and have a history of pursuing young English talent — they made a significant attempt to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea several years ago.
Liverpool’s recruitment strategy this summer will be shaped by new head coach Andoni Iraola, who has joined from Bournemouth. His most pressing task is replacing Mohamed Salah, who departed the club this summer, with RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande understood to be a primary target.
