Bayern Munich ready to meet United's £34.5m Rashford valuation but wages remain the obstacle
Bayern Munich are prepared to pay Manchester United's £34.5m asking price for Marcus Rashford this summer, according to reports, though the forward's £325,000-per-week wages could scupper a deal. Barcelona, where Rashford spent last season on loan, are reluctant to make his stay permanent.
Bayern Munich are willing to meet Manchester United’s £34.5million valuation of Marcus Rashford, according to The Sun, but the German champions are unwilling to match the 28-year-old’s reported £325,000-per-week wages — a stumbling block that could derail any potential move this summer.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions as Hansi Flick’s side claimed the La Liga title. He reportedly accepted a wage cut to join the Catalan club, but Barcelona are reluctant to trigger the £26m purchase option that would make the deal permanent, with their transfer focus shifting towards a striker.
The Spanish club’s decision has effectively reopened Rashford’s future, with several Premier League clubs also said to have registered interest in the England international. Bayern, however, have emerged as the most prominent suitor, with reports indicating Vincent Kompany’s side are keen to strengthen the left side of their attack.
The German champions had been tracking Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon before Barcelona moved quickly to sign him for a reported £60m, leaving Bayern to reassess their options. Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli have both been linked, though neither club is understood to be willing to sell. Reports suggest Rashford would represent the most affordable of the three alternatives.
Bayern’s pursuit of Rashford may also hinge on activity elsewhere in their squad. Speculation continues to link French international Michael Olise with a move to Real Madrid, and a sale at the Bernabéu could free up both funds and a starting berth that might make the proposition more attractive to Rashford.
For now, the central issue remains wages. No club in Europe is said to be willing to match Rashford’s current package, and the reports indicate he will need to accept a further reduction if he is to secure a move away from Old Trafford. United, for their part, have set a clear price — it is Rashford’s salary demands that will determine whether Bayern, or anyone else, follows through.
