Bayern Munich have emerged as a serious destination for Marcus Rashford after Liverpool’s firm stance on teenage winger Rio Ngumoha appears to have redirected the German club’s summer recruitment plans toward the Manchester United forward.

Rashford, 28, is currently representing England at the World Cup, with no decision on his club future expected until the tournament concludes. Barcelona, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, are unwilling to pay United’s full £26m asking price to make the deal permanent, leaving the door open for other suitors.

Bayern had been tracking Liverpool’s 17-year-old Ngumoha, but insiders at Anfield reportedly view the teenager as “potentially elite” and have no intention of letting him leave. With that avenue closed, The Sun reports that Bayern have no objection to matching United’s £34.5m valuation of Rashford — though his £325,000-a-week wages remain a potential stumbling block. Rashford was understood to have been willing to take a pay cut to join Barcelona, which may indicate flexibility on that front.

Rashford’s loan spell in Spain was a productive one. He scored 14 goals and contributed 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in the process. Despite that form, the Catalan club have opted against a permanent move.

A transfer to Bayern would place Rashford alongside Harry Kane, who has been in extraordinary form in Germany. The former Tottenham striker scored 61 goals this season alone and has won two Bundesliga titles and two domestic cups since joining in 2023 — a track record that could prove persuasive for Rashford as he weighs his options.

Former United midfielder Michael Carrick, who is said to maintain a good relationship with Rashford, stated in April that no final decision had been made on the winger’s future. Rashford is due to return to United at the end of June, at which point talks over a permanent exit are expected to intensify.
