Manchester United look set to miss out on Nathaniel Brown, with Bayern Munich closing in on a £48 million deal for the Eintracht Frankfurt full-back after the 23-year-old reportedly gave his verbal agreement to a five-year contract at the Bundesliga champions.

United had tracked Brown last season as they searched for left-back cover, but it is Bayern — under head coach Vincent Kompany — who have moved to the front of the queue. Sky Germany has reported that an agreement between Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt is imminent, though negotiations over the fee are still ongoing.

Brown has been one of the standout performers at the 2026 World Cup with Germany, underlining exactly what United will be missing. He assisted Nico Schlotterbeck’s decisive goal against Curacao from a corner before adding one himself in a commanding 7-1 victory, taking his tally to 12 goal contributions across all competitions this season.

Team-mate Antonio Rudiger has been effusive in his praise. The former Chelsea centre-back said he needed little convincing after watching Brown shut down Manchester City winger Antonie Semenyo during Germany’s 2-1 friendly win over Ghana in March. “I don’t need to say much about him, I’m positively surprised,” Rudiger said. “He’s a very calm character off the pitch, but on the pitch, he’s a monster. These young lads are already very far ahead for their age.”

Brown has attracted attention from across Europe, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool all reported to have watched him alongside United. Despite the breadth of interest, Bayern’s early movement on personal terms appears to have given them a decisive advantage.

The failure to land Brown leaves United with a pressing problem at left-back. With Patrick Dorgu expected to operate primarily as a winger next season, Luke Shaw would remain their only recognised option in that position. United have consequently made signing a left-back a priority this summer, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall understood to be among the alternatives under consideration.
