Barcelona's reluctance to pay £26m option leaves Rashford's future unresolved
Marcus Rashford's loan spell at Barcelona has produced 28 goal involvements and an England World Cup call-up, yet the Spanish club appear increasingly unlikely to trigger their £26m option to buy before it expires in two weeks, leaving Manchester United to weigh alternative options in the forward market.
Marcus Rashford’s loan spell at Barcelona looks set to end without a permanent transfer, with the Spanish club showing little sign of triggering their £26m option to buy before it expires in just over two weeks.
Rashford joined Barcelona from Manchester United last summer, and the fee written into the agreement was one that many United supporters felt undervalued the forward. Those doubts appear well-founded: Rashford contributed 28 goal involvements across the season, earned praise from sporting director Deco — who described his campaign as “very good” — and secured a place in England’s World Cup squad. Despite all that, Barcelona’s actions in the transfer market point elsewhere. The club’s reported pursuit of Anthony Gordon for a fee approaching three times the Rashford option price makes a permanent Rashford deal look unlikely rather than imminent.
Manchester United’s position has been consistent throughout. The club made clear there would be no second loan arrangement and no negotiation on the fee — Barcelona either pay £26m or Rashford returns to Old Trafford. With the deadline approaching and no announcement forthcoming, the latter outcome is increasingly probable.
That firm stance deserves credit given United’s recent history of poor transfer negotiating, even if it leaves the club with a significant problem to solve. Rashford has no future at Old Trafford — though former United manager Michael Carrick was notably guarded when asked about the forward’s situation — and finding a buyer willing to meet United’s valuation in a crowded summer market will not be straightforward.
The forward market is set to be unusually active. United have been linked with Yan Diomande, a youngster also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. AC Milan’s Rafael Leao is another name circulating, while Mohamed Salah is widely expected to move to either MLS or the Saudi Pro League rather than remain in European football.
Closer to home, Manchester City may sanction Jack Grealish’s departure, and Savinho is again being linked with Tottenham after the north London club’s interest last summer. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, meanwhile, is set to appear at the World Cup alongside Rashford, a tournament that could further raise his profile and transfer value.
For United, the Rashford situation crystallises a broader challenge: holding firm on valuation is the right principle, but it only delivers results if an alternative buyer emerges. With the Barcelona window closing fast, the club’s summer planning in attack may need to accelerate regardless of how the Rashford saga concludes.
