Barcelona's Nou Camp debt crisis threatens to derail Rashford's permanent move from Man Utd
Barcelona must decide by June 15 whether to trigger a £26m purchase option for Marcus Rashford, but a spiralling Nou Camp renovation budget has left the club struggling to raise the funds — with Manchester United unwilling to accept a second loan.
Marcus Rashford’s hopes of a permanent move to Barcelona are in serious jeopardy, with the Spanish club’s mounting financial difficulties making it increasingly unlikely they can meet Manchester United’s £26m asking price before the June 15 deadline.
Following a season-long loan spell at the Camp Nou, Barcelona hold an option to sign the 28-year-old forward permanently this summer. However, the club is reportedly attempting to negotiate the fee down or extend the loan arrangement for a further season — an outcome United are firmly opposed to, with the club eager to make a clean break from Rashford.
At the heart of Barcelona’s financial squeeze is the ongoing renovation of the Nou Camp. A £1.25 billion loan from Goldman Sachs has proven insufficient to complete the project, and the club is set to request an increased credit limit at either its Extraordinary General Assembly in July or at an ordinary meeting before next season begins. The stadium’s capacity is currently restricted to just under 63,000 while construction continues, with two VIP rings, a third tier, and an eventual roof still to be added — a process that could stretch well into next summer.
An unresolved dispute with Barcelona City Council has also cast doubt over a potential return to the Olympic Stadium at Montjuic, which the club used as a temporary home before moving back to the Nou Camp in November.
With Barcelona dragging their feet, other clubs have entered the picture. Bayern Munich are reportedly willing to pay United’s asking price, but are unwilling to match Rashford’s current wages. According to Marca, Rashford has no interest in joining Vincent Kompany’s side and is not entertaining approaches from rival clubs — leaving him in a difficult position if Barcelona cannot reach an agreement with United.
For now, Rashford’s attention turns to international duty, with England’s pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday serving as preparation for the World Cup.
