Barcelona's £69m Gordon deal leaves Rashford's Man Utd future in limbo

Newcastle United have agreed to sell Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million plus add-ons, a move that complicates Manchester United's hopes of a permanent deal for Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at the Catalan club.

Barcelona have agreed a £69.3 million plus add-ons fee with Newcastle United for Anthony Gordon, a deal that casts fresh doubt over whether the La Liga champions will meet Manchester United’s asking price for Marcus Rashford this summer. Gordon is now scheduled for a medical as the transfer moves toward completion, with the England winger set to roughly double his wages to around £300,000 per week.

The contrast in how Barcelona have handled the two deals is stark. While the club moved swiftly to meet Newcastle’s valuation for Gordon, they have been attempting to negotiate down the £26 million clause that would allow them to sign Rashford permanently from Manchester United — a fee agreed as part of his loan move last summer.

Rashford, 28, enjoyed a productive spell at Camp Nou, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists, and has reportedly agreed to accept almost half his salary to stay. However, with Gordon arriving to compete for the same left-sided position, another loan arrangement for Rashford is now considered a more likely outcome than a permanent transfer.

That scenario would leave United in an awkward position. The club’s preference is to sell Rashford outright at the price agreed last summer, and the academy graduate remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028. Barcelona’s willingness to spend heavily on Gordon could simultaneously be used as justification for not stretching further to meet United’s demands for Rashford.

Gordon’s arrival also reduces Barcelona’s urgency to secure Rashford permanently. Hansi Flick is reported to be open to keeping both players, but with Gordon now set to challenge for the left-wing berth — and with both men competing for places in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad — Rashford’s path to regular first-team football at Barca becomes narrower.

Speaking after Barcelona clinched the La Liga title, Rashford was cautiously optimistic about his future but stopped short of confirming he would stay. “This is the perfect way I want it to end,” he said. “I’m very happy, I just want to enjoy today. I live in the moment. At the end of the season we will see.”

He added: “I came here to win and we do this so I’m very happy. It’s an incredible feeling. Over the season we deserved it, we were the best team. We had some bad moments but we always come back and fight to improve.”

Whether United’s hierarchy would accept a second loan or a reduced fee in light of Barcelona’s Gordon outlay remains unclear, but the Spanish club’s latest move has significantly shifted the dynamics of the Rashford situation heading into the summer window.
