Barcelona trigger wage clause to give Dani Olmo long-promised contract improvement
Barcelona have activated a pre-agreed clause in Dani Olmo's contract to raise his salary, honouring a promise made when the Spain international accepted reduced wages to fit within the club's financial limits at the time of his 2024 signing.
Barcelona have improved Dani Olmo’s contract by triggering a clause built into his original deal, according to a report by MD, rewarding the midfielder for accepting a below-market salary when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2024.
Olmo signed for €55m after Barcelona failed to land Nico Williams, and agreed to wages that fitted within the club’s salary cap to ease the financial impact of his transfer. Both parties included a clause stipulating that after two seasons, Barcelona would raise his pay to compensate for those initial sacrifices. The 28-year-old is contracted until 2030, giving the club considerable time to benefit from the arrangement.
His arrival at the Camp Nou was far from straightforward. Barcelona initially registered Olmo under an emergency injury rule, and when that expired, the club required a court order to keep him eligible for the second half of the season — a saga that overshadowed much of his debut campaign.
On the pitch, Olmo’s first season was disrupted by minor injuries, and his second brought inconsistency, though his form improved markedly in the final two months. That upturn has done little to secure his place, however. Fermín López has pushed hard for the number 10 role, and with Anthony Gordon joining the squad and capable of playing on the left, manager Hansi Flick may be tempted to shift Raphinha wide again — a move that would further crowd Olmo out of his preferred position.
Flick has consistently spoken highly of Olmo in public, but the Spaniard faces genuine competition for a starting berth heading into next season. The contract improvement signals that Barcelona remain committed to him as a key figure, even as the squad around him grows more competitive.
