Barcelona trigger pre-agreed wage clause to improve Dani Olmo's contract
Barcelona have activated a clause built into Dani Olmo's original deal that raises his wages, rewarding the Spain international for accepting a reduced salary when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2024. The 28-year-old remains under contract at the club until 2030.
Barcelona have improved Dani Olmo’s contract by triggering a pre-agreed clause that increases his wages, according to MD, compensating the Spain international for the financial concessions he made when he signed from RB Leipzig for €55m in the summer of 2024.
Olmo had turned down larger offers from other clubs to accept a salary that fitted within Barcelona’s financial limits, easing the registration burden his transfer created. Both parties agreed at the time that after two seasons the club would activate a clause raising his pay in recognition of that sacrifice. The 28-year-old is contracted at the Camp Nou until 2030.
His arrival in Catalonia was far from straightforward. Olmo was initially registered under an emergency injury rule, and when that provision expired, Barcelona required a court order to keep him eligible for the second half of the 2024-25 season.
On the pitch, consistency has proved elusive. Injuries disrupted his first campaign, and while his form improved markedly in the final two months of this past season, he has faced growing competition for the number ten role. Fermín López’s strong performances have put pressure on Olmo’s place in Hansi Flick’s starting eleven.
The arrival of Anthony Gordon adds another variable. Gordon is capable of playing on the left flank, which could tempt Flick to reposition Raphinha there — a move the coach has tried on several occasions — and further complicate Olmo’s path to regular starts. Despite the competition, Flick has consistently spoken highly of Olmo in public, suggesting the midfielder remains part of his plans heading into next season.
