FC Barcelona has set their sights on Castello Lukeba to address their central defence needs. According to sources close to the club, manager Hansi Flick has personally requested the recruitment of the RB Leipzig defender, whose price tag stands at €60 million — a sum that would make him the most expensive defender in Barcelona’s history, ahead of Jules Koundé (€50m).

Formed at Olympique Lyonnais, the 23-year-old Lukeba, who earned a France cap in October 2023, has a release clause available this summer. His profile as a solid, clean-playing defender in build-up play aligns with the football Flick intends to implement in Catalonia.

To finance this operation, Barcelona must first offload a key player. Both Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde are on the transfer list. The Spanish left-back was notably excluded from the squad for Sunday’s match against Elche, fuelling speculation about an imminent departure, particularly towards the Premier League.

The club’s financial situation complicates matters. The recent arrival of Rodri for €70 million forces the board to sell before buying. The striker situation also remains unresolved: after failed negotiations with Atlético Madrid over Julian Alvarez — Barcelona refusing to exceed €120 million — the club is exploring cheaper alternatives, including Georges Mikautadze. The departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres make this recruitment just as urgent as securing a central defender.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid has already completed their summer transfer window with investments totalling €225 million, including Yan Diomandé, Marc Cucurella, Carlos Espi and Denzel Dumfries, as well as Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva on free transfers.
