Manchester United suffered a chastening 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney reserving his sharpest words for left-back Luke Shaw, whose positioning for Hull’s second goal he described as “schoolboy” defending.

Hull took the lead in the 17th minute after goalkeeper Senne Lammens kept out a header from Oli McBurnie, only for Semi Ajayi to react quickest and smash in the rebound. The hosts doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when Regan Slater delivered a precise free-kick for Nobel Mendy, whose header effectively ended the contest before half-time.

Analysing the second goal on BBC’s Match of the Day, Rooney — United’s all-time record scorer — walked through a sequence of defensive errors that culminated in Shaw dropping five yards behind his own back line and playing Hull’s forward line onside.

“This is schoolboy defending from Shaw,” Rooney said. “Man United have a good line, and Hull have been waiting for this all day. Shaw drops in, he’s five yards behind his back line, and if this ball is good enough — which it was — it’s impossible to stop. So Hull had a game plan: get the ball in the box and pick up second balls, and Man United found it really difficult.”

Rooney also highlighted a broader lack of intensity from United across the pitch, pointing to Bryan Mbeumo’s failure to press quickly enough and Youri Tielemans conceding the free-kick that led directly to Mendy’s header.

“Mbeumo doesn’t get out quick enough, allows the ball to come into the box,” Rooney continued. “There’s no intensity, no pressing on the ball. Tielemans gives away a free-kick, which leads to the second goal.”

The defeat is a damaging start for manager Michael Carrick, whose side were heavy favourites against a Hull team playing their first top-flight fixture since their return to the Premier League. Hull, by contrast, executed their game plan with discipline, pressing relentlessly and capitalising on every second ball United failed to win.

For Shaw, the performance will intensify scrutiny on a player who has endured a difficult run of form, and Rooney’s public assessment — delivered on the most-watched football programme in the country — is unlikely to ease the pressure heading into the weeks ahead.
