Barcelona have quietly tested the waters over a potential move for Harry Kane, reaching out to the England captain’s representatives to assess his openness to leaving Bayern Munich for La Liga. No formal offer has been made, but the Catalan club’s interest is genuine, driven by the need to replace Robert Lewandowski and shaped by an ongoing contract dispute between Kane and the Bayern hierarchy.

According to Sport, the initial response from Kane’s camp has been cool. The 32-year-old is understood to be highly satisfied with life in Munich, and the early feedback received by Barcelona has been described as “cold”. Nevertheless, the club are monitoring the situation closely, aware that circumstances can change quickly once a player’s contractual future becomes uncertain.

The source of that uncertainty is a disagreement over duration. Kane’s current deal at Bayern runs until 2027, and while both parties are open to an extension, they remain far apart on terms. Kane is reportedly seeking security until 2030, whereas Bayern are willing to offer only two additional seasons. The striker joined the German champions in 2023 in a deal worth close to €100 million and currently earns approximately €25 million per year.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are treating the Kane inquiry as a secondary option rather than their primary pursuit. Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid remains the club’s first-choice target for the number nine role. Unlike the lukewarm response from Kane’s camp, the Argentine international has shown genuine interest in a move to the Spotify Camp Nou. Flick’s tactical system demands forwards who contribute to high-intensity pressing as well as goalscoring, and the club hierarchy believes Alvarez fits that profile more naturally.

The signing of Anthony Gordon has already reinforced Flick’s attacking options, but the German coach has made clear he will not compromise on his footballing philosophy when it comes to a central striker. Alvarez is considered the most tactically compatible and realistic option currently available.

For his part, Kane’s immediate focus is on the World Cup with England. Barcelona’s calculation is straightforward: if the contract standoff with Bayern remains unresolved after the tournament concludes, the conditions for a serious approach may finally exist. Until then, the club are content to wait and watch.
