Barcelona Refuses to Trigger Rashford Option, Winger Forced to Return to Manchester United
Barcelona's purchase option on Marcus Rashford has expired without being exercised, sending the 28-year-old winger back to Manchester United. The Catalan club prefers to invest heavily in Anthony Gordon rather than spend the €30 million stipulated in Rashford's contract.
Marcus Rashford is back at Manchester United. Barcelona’s purchase option at the end of his loan has expired without being triggered, ending the English winger’s 28-year-old Spanish adventure, despite his desire to establish himself there permanently.
Barça chose to concentrate its resources on Anthony Gordon, signed for €70 million — plus €10 million in bonuses — from Newcastle United. The €30 million initially earmarked for Rashford was therefore not spent, with the Catalan club deeming the investment insufficiently prioritized against its other ambitions.
According to Mundo Deportivo, no final decision has yet been made. If Barcelona wishes to keep Rashford, it will now have to negotiate a permanent transfer: Manchester United has made clear it is not considering a second loan, a position confirmed by the BBC.
The Red Devils are approaching this matter from a position of strength. Manchester’s management is counting on the 2026 World Cup to see Rashford raise his level and, in turn, drive up the bidding beyond €30 million. At this stage, no other club has shown concrete interest in the winger, who joined the England squad in May under Barcelona colors and will play the competition’s opening match as a Manchester United player.
