Barcelona have moved ahead of Bayern Munich in the race to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, with sporting director Deco holding talks with the player’s representatives during a recent trip to London, according to MD. Gordon, who is widely expected to leave Newcastle this summer, is said to prefer a move to the La Liga champions over the Bundesliga giants.

The 25-year-old contributed 17 goals and five assists across all competitions for Newcastle in 2025-26, operating as both a winger and a striker under Eddie Howe. Barcelona view that positional flexibility as a significant asset, with Deco seeing Gordon as a player who could ease the pressure of finding a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski while also filling the left-wing role the club intends to address regardless of what happens with Marcus Rashford.

Gordon had already been in talks with Bayern Munich before Barcelona accelerated their interest. The player’s reported preference for the Camp Nou represents a notable setback for the Bavarians, who had been considered frontrunners.

Deco’s London visit was primarily arranged to discuss Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, who also features on Barcelona’s shortlist alongside Julian Alvarez and Harry Kane. Gordon’s representatives were also met during the same trip, and Barcelona have since made their interest known directly to the player.

The principal obstacle remains the transfer fee. Newcastle are reportedly valuing Gordon at €85–90m, though earlier reports suggested a deal could be structured closer to €75m — a figure more workable for Barcelona given they are simultaneously pursuing a new centre-back and a striker. How the club balance those competing priorities across a single transfer window will determine whether they can meet Newcastle’s asking price.
