Barcelona open €92m talks with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon as striker search stalls
Barcelona have entered club-to-club negotiations with Newcastle United over a deal worth around £80m (€92m) for England winger Anthony Gordon, with the player reported to have already agreed personal terms with Hansi Flick's side.
Barcelona have opened direct talks with Newcastle United over the signing of Anthony Gordon, with a fee in the region of £80m (€92m) under discussion, according to reports from the Daily Mail and Spanish outlet Sport. The 23-year-old England international is said to have already agreed personal terms with the Catalan club, preferring a move to the Camp Nou over interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Sporting director Deco travelled to England earlier this week to meet with Gordon’s representatives before formal club-to-club negotiations began. Barcelona’s pursuit of the Newcastle forward comes after their attempts to sign a centre-forward this summer hit significant obstacles. Moves for Julián Álvarez and João Pedro have both stalled, with Atlético Madrid and Chelsea unwilling to sell on Barcelona’s terms.
Gordon came to Barcelona’s attention during the 2025-26 Champions League, in which the two clubs met three times. Flick deployed him as a centre-forward on several occasions for Newcastle, though his natural position is on the left wing — an area Deco is also looking to reinforce, particularly if Marcus Rashford cannot be kept beyond his loan spell.
The potential signing raises questions about fit and value. Gordon is not a natural number nine, which remains Barcelona’s primary need following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, and he would not displace Raphinha as the first-choice left winger. At £80m, the fee would represent a significant outlay for a player who would likely operate in a secondary role within Flick’s system.
Nevertheless, Sport report that Gordon is strongly attracted to the prospect of joining Barcelona, and the speed with which personal terms were agreed suggests the player’s preference is clear. Whether Newcastle will sanction the sale at a price that suits both clubs remains the central hurdle.
