Barcelona have entered the race to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in what is shaping up to be a significant transfer battle for the England international.

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023, has been the subject of persistent speculation for two seasons. His current valuation is reported at around £75 million, a figure that could climb considerably if a bidding war develops. Liverpool are also understood to be long-term admirers of the 25-year-old, extending his list of suitors beyond just the two European heavyweights.

The winger has been central to Newcastle’s recent success, contributing 17 goals this season — including 10 in the Champions League, one of which came against Barcelona — and playing a key role in the club’s 2024-25 Carabao Cup triumph, which ended a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware. Newcastle also secured Champions League qualification for the coming season.

Despite those numbers, signs of an impending departure have been growing. Head coach Eddie Howe omitted Gordon from his squad upon his return from injury, citing a need to focus on the future — a decision widely interpreted as an indication that the player’s time at St James’ Park may be drawing to a close. Gordon did not feature in Newcastle’s final six Premier League matches of the season.

His club situation has not affected his international standing. Gordon has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, where he is expected to compete with Marcus Rashford — who spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Barcelona — for the left-wing berth in England’s starting XI. Gordon was part of Gareth Southgate’s squad at Euro 2024 but made only one brief substitute appearance as England reached the final before losing to Spain.

With Barcelona now in direct contact with Newcastle, according to reports, the summer transfer window looks set to bring a resolution to a saga that has hung over the club for two years.
