Barcelona Declines Rashford Purchase Option, English Striker Returns to Manchester United
After a loan spell at FC Barcelona where he won La Liga, Marcus Rashford is returning to Manchester United as the Catalan club has decided not to exercise his €30 million purchase option. The English forward departs Spain with a league title but no permanent future at the club.
Marcus Rashford is returning to Manchester United after a season-long loan at FC Barcelona, with the Blaugrana leadership deciding not to exercise his €30 million purchase option. The English forward is leaving with a La Liga title in hand, but without a future at the Catalan club.
Spanish daily Marca confirmed the news on Wednesday, revealing that the recruitment of Anthony Gordon has definitively closed the door on Rashford. Barcelona is preparing to pay €70 million to Newcastle to secure the services of the English winger, who plays in the same position as Rashford.
According to Marca, it was primarily manager Hansi Flick’s judgment that tipped the scales. The German coach was reportedly particularly impressed by Anthony Gordon’s defensive work at Newcastle, a quality that Rashford does not possess at the same level. The salary factor, however, did not weigh on the decision, as both players cost roughly the same amount annually.
Statistically, Rashford delivered real value to Barça: in thirty-two matches across all competitions, he scored eight goals and provided seven assists, won sixty-seven duels and created forty-six goal-scoring opportunities.
The English international is returning to Old Trafford, where his future remains uncertain. Under the direction of Michael Carrick, tipped to take charge of the Red Devils, Rashford could regain playing time — provided Manchester United chooses to keep him in the squad for next season.
