Barcelona can re-sign Jan Virgili for €7m after Mallorca's La Liga relegation

Mallorca's relegation from La Liga has dropped Jan Virgili's release clause from €30m to €12m, allowing Barcelona to exercise a 40% sell-on clause and re-sign the winger they sold last summer for as little as €7m.

Barcelona can reclaim winger Jan Virgili for approximately €7m this summer after Mallorca’s relegation from La Liga triggered a reduction in his release clause, according to Sport. The Catalan club sold Virgili to Mallorca last summer for around €3.5m but retained a 40% sell-on clause, which now allows them to re-sign him at a €5m discount on whatever his market price is.

Virgili’s release clause stood at €30m during Mallorca’s time in La Liga, but the Son Moix club’s drop to the second division has seen it fall to €12m. Barcelona’s sell-on arrangement means they can effectively acquire him for €7m — a figure that represents a significant saving over any rival club.

The 22-year-old made 31 appearances in his debut La Liga season, scoring twice and registering four assists. His direct, explosive style drew attention throughout the campaign, and Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has identified him as a credible option to provide cover for Raphinha on the left flank.

Real Betis have also registered interest following Mallorca’s relegation, viewing €12m as an attractive price point. Barcelona, however, hold a structural advantage that would be difficult for any competing club to overcome.

The backdrop to the pursuit is uncertainty over Marcus Rashford, who joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in January. Negotiations over a possible extension are ongoing, and the club is not treating his return as guaranteed. Even if Rashford does stay, Hansi Flick’s squad is understood to be in the market for a younger wide option.

Ez Abde and Victor Munoz have also been mentioned in connection with Barcelona in recent weeks, but the financial logic around Virgili is compelling. Should Flick ultimately decide the player does not fit his plans, the article notes Barcelona could sign him for €7m and sell him on immediately for a profit, while retaining further contractual clauses to preserve a stake in his future value.
