Barcelona have agreed a fee of approximately £70m plus bonuses with Newcastle United for winger Anthony Gordon, ending a prolonged period of uncertainty over his future at St James’ Park.

Talks moved to an advanced stage on Wednesday, with Barcelona’s offer meeting Newcastle’s valuation. The Spanish club are seeking to spread the payments across instalments, and discussions over the deal’s structure are understood to be well advanced. Bayern Munich had also registered interest, but it is Barcelona who have moved decisively to secure the 23-year-old.

Gordon is said to favour the move to La Liga despite finishing the season as Newcastle’s top scorer. He signed a long-term contract at the club that still has four years remaining, yet he played no part in any of Newcastle’s final four matches of the campaign as exit speculation intensified.

Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson had previously acknowledged that the club would likely need to sell players to fund summer recruitment, and Gordon’s departure would represent a significant windfall. The winger joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for an initial fee of £40m and has made 152 appearances for the club.

Gordon was included in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for World Cup qualification and will be keen to have his club situation resolved ahead of the tournament. Manager Eddie Howe had faced repeated questions about Gordon’s commitment to the project in recent months, and the agreement now draws that chapter to a close.

Should the move be completed, Gordon will become one of the more expensive British exports in recent transfer windows, with Barcelona committing to a fee that could surpass £70m once performance-related bonuses are factored in.
