Balogun stars again as USA seal World Cup last-32 place with 2-0 win over Australia
The United States clinched a spot in the World Cup knockout rounds with a 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle, with Folarin Balogun again central to the attack after his brace against Paraguay.
The United States secured their place in the World Cup last 32 with a composed 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday, keeping Mauricio Pochettino’s side perfect through two group games.
Australia handed the hosts an early gift when defender Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net in the ninth minute, the goal set up by a sharp run and low cross from Monaco forward Folarin Balogun. It was a familiar sight: Balogun had scored twice against Paraguay in the opening group game, and he was again the catalyst here, stretching the Australian backline with his pace and directness.
The second goal arrived just before half-time and required a VAR review before it was confirmed. Antonee Robinson played a free-kick to Sergino Dest on the edge of the box, whose effort deflected high into the air. Alex Freeman reacted quickest to nod home, though the linesman’s flag initially ruled it out. The technology overturned the call, and the United States went into the break two goals to the good.
Balogun had a chance to put the result beyond doubt early in the second half but was denied by a strong block from Alessandro Circati. Australia, with changes made at the interval by manager Tony Popovic, built some momentum midway through the half, yet their opportunities lacked real clarity until a flurry of late corners that the US defence ultimately dealt with.
Pochettino’s side now sit top of the group and will confirm that status if Turkey and Paraguay draw. The USA close out their group stage against Turkey in Los Angeles. Should the USA finish top, they will face a third-placed team from one of five other groups in the last 32.
Australia, meanwhile, must wait to learn what is at stake in their final group game against Paraguay in California, with their knockout prospects still uncertain.
