Balde chooses to stay at Barcelona as Zirkzee expects United exit before deadline

Meanwhile, striker Joshua Zirkzee is expected to depart Old Trafford before the summer window closes on September 1.

Reports linking Balde to United had gathered pace this week after he was left out of Barcelona’s season-opening victory over Elche, with an imminent offer from Old Trafford appearing likely. United had been pushing for a loan deal with an option to buy, but Barcelona were only willing to sanction a permanent sale — a sticking point that ultimately became moot after Balde’s decision to stay.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed Balde’s wish to remain in Catalonia despite increased competition for his position. La Masia graduate Xavi Espart impressed at left-back against Elche, registering an assist on his opportunity, while Joao Cancelo has also returned to the club this summer. Head coach Hansi Flick had indicated he needed to speak with Balde following the Elche match, and that conversation appears to have resolved in the player’s favour.

Reports had valued Balde at around £30 million, with United viewing him as a more affordable alternative to Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. Romano has since stated it would now take a “big proposal” to prise the defender away from Barcelona before the window shuts.

On the outgoing front, the Daily Mail has reported that Joshua Zirkzee expects to leave United ahead of the September 1 deadline. The Dutch striker arrived at Old Trafford last summer but has struggled to establish himself as a reliable first-team presence.
